Montreux From a Different Perspective
A journey through time and nature awaits! Hike along Grammont, a majestic peak in the Chablais Alps, situated directly across the lake from Montreux. Grammont is not only a stunning natural wonder but also holds historical significance as the site of the “Taurendunum event” in 563 AD, where a massive landslide triggered a tsunami on Lake Geneva.
Timeline
Present Day
The hike begins at the small mountain village of Miex.
Morning
Start hiking towards Grammont from Miex.
Mid-Morning
Arrive at the milky-blue waters of Lake Taney. Stop at the alpine inn for a snack or a drink.
Early Afternoon
Begin the toughest part of the hike, a 2-hour uphill climb. The path starts as a paved road and gradually becomes a narrow trail. Pass through alpine pastures used by shepherds during the summer.
Afternoon
Reach the summit of Grammont and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Swiss Riviera and Lavaux Vineyard Terraces (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Late Afternoon
Descend from Grammont through a barely used trail in the dense forest on the southern slope.
Evening
Finish the hike in the picturesque town of Le Bouveret. Take a boat back to Montreux.

The length of the hike is 20.03 km (12.45 miles) with a total ascent of 1,229 m (4,032 feet).

Everything about the day was amazing from meeting in the morning till the drop off at the end. I was the only one on this particular trip and it was great. The instructor is easy to talk with and so knowledgeable of the area. We chatted the whole day. As far as the hike it was gorgeous! I live in the mountains in the US but this hike and mountains were just amazing the scenery spectacular. We even had time to sample the ice cream from the local cows on the way down from the hike.

This hike was a dream! Apina took me through the most beautiful scenes: through a beautiful forest, a serene lake town, a farming area with dairy cows grazing and the most gorgeous fields of wildflowers… all the way to the top of Le Grammont where we sat to eat the lunch he prepared while looking at an incredible view of Lake Geneva. The guide was very attentive, so well prepared with equipment and snacks, and had lots to share about the land and history. Would highly recommend taking this hike!

Our instructor was a wonderful host, he helped us pick the best route for our abilities and weather conditions during the late winter season here. Basic hiking gear such as hiking boots is recommended but he can supply other items such as poles when needed. He also provides a light picnic lunch with local ingredients in a beautiful setting. This was a beautiful and unique way to experience the mountain areas around Montreux. We were in safe hands and had a wonderful experience!
